Commands
Every Sortr command in Discord, with its options, where it works, who may use it and what Sortr replies, plus the buttons inside a ticket.
Every command Sortr adds to Discord: what each option means, where it works, who may use it and what Sortr replies. Near the end are the buttons inside a ticket, which do the same jobs, /help, which every server has, and Import into Sortr, the one command on Discord's Apps menu.
#Before you start
/new,/close,/transcript,/addand/removeappear once a panel switches them on under Slash commands./helpis there in every server, for everyone, whatever the panels switch on. Panels themselves are posted from the dashboard, with Send panel: see Panels.- Who sees a panel command and who can use it are separate. While no panel in the server has roles picked for a command, Discord lists it only for members with the Manage Messages permission, so support staff without that permission do not see it either, though Sortr would let them use it. Once any panel picks roles for it, Discord lists it for every member. Either way, Sortr decides who may use it each time it is run.
- Commands only work in a server, never in DMs. Sortr's replies to them are private: only the person who ran the command sees them.
- Run commands or press Sortr's buttons faster than three in a row, then one every 3 seconds, and Sortr answers "Slow down a little. Try again in 3 seconds."
- Now and then Sortr pauses its calls to Discord for a few minutes, to stay within Discord's limits. Meanwhile every command and button gets only "Sortr is pausing for a few minutes. Try again shortly." A Discord account blocked from Sortr gets "Sortr isn't available to this account. To challenge this, write to team@sortr.xyz." for anything it runs or presses. If the people who run Sortr have blocked the server and Sortr has not managed to leave it yet, every command and button gets "Sortr isn't available to this server." and Sortr tries to leave again.
- On this page, the support team means the server owner, members with the Administrator permission, and members with a support role set to Full access under Who can see it. Roles set to Contributor or Viewer can see tickets but are not on the support team here. In a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions, Administrators other than the owner are on the support team only through such a role. See Servers that require 2FA.
#Who can use the commands
One rule covers /new, /close, /transcript, /add and /remove. Sortr goes by the panel: the panel being opened from for /new, the ticket's own panel for the rest. /add in a channel that is not a ticket has no panel behind it and goes by the channel's own permissions instead: see /add.
- With no roles picked for the command under Slash commands › Who can use it, only the support team can use it.
- With roles picked, only members holding one of them can. The support team no longer can, unless they hold one too.
- The server owner always can, and so can Administrators, with two exceptions. In a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions, only the owner does. And for
/newon a panel that hands out a role at or above an Administrator's own highest role, that Administrator goes by the rules above like anyone else: they need a role picked for/newor, with none picked, a support role on Full access.
Anyone else gets one of these replies, with the name of the command they ran:
| Reply | When |
|---|---|
| Only the support team can use /close here. | No roles are picked for the command, and you are not on the support team. |
| Only some roles can use /close here. | Roles are picked for the command, and you hold none of them. |
| /close is switched off for this panel. | The panel has the command switched off. Discord still lists it while another panel has it on. |
| This ticket's panel no longer exists, so only the server owner and administrators can use /close here. | The ticket comes from a panel deleted before Sortr kept a deleted panel's settings, so there is no support team to go by. |
| This ticket came from Ticket Tool without a Sortr panel, so only the server owner, administrators and the ticket's own roles can use /close here. | Sortr took the ticket over from Ticket Tool without a panel of its own to go by. The ticket's own roles, those shown as its staff when it was taken over, can use /close, /transcript, /add and /remove there. |
Who can use a command has the full rule, how to pick the roles, and what to do when a support role does not see a command in Discord's list. The role lists on Ticket buttons do not reach commands.
#/new
| Options | member (optional): who the ticket belongs to. Blank opens one for you. |
| Where | Anywhere in the server. |
| Who | The support team of the panel the ticket opens from, or only the roles picked for /new on that panel. The server owner and Administrators always can, with the exceptions above.Opening a ticket for someone else always needs the support team, whichever roles are picked. On a panel that gives or takes roles when a ticket opens or closes, you also need a higher role than that member, unless you own the server. On a panel that gives a role at or above your own highest role, only the server owner can. |
Sortr offers only the panels you may use /new for. With one, the ticket opens from it straight away. With several, a menu that only you see asks which panel the ticket should come from, listing them oldest first. Sortr then checks that panel's Limits and rules for the member the ticket is for (blocked roles, support hours, cooldown and ticket limits) and opens the ticket as the panel's button would, with two differences:
- The Questions form is not shown.
- No button or menu option is involved, so an option's Who can use it is not checked and its Give roles and Remove roles are not applied. The panel's own When a ticket opens roles are.
When you open a ticket for someone else, the Ticket opened entry in the event log names you both.
| Reply | When |

Ticket 0042 opened: followed by a link to the channel | The ticket is open. |
| /new is switched off in this server. | No panel has /new switched on. Discord can still list the command for a moment after the last panel switched it off. |
| Only some roles can use /new here. | No panel with /new on lets you use it, and at least one of them has roles picked for /new. |
| Only the support team can use /new here. | No panel with /new on lets you use it, and none of them has roles picked for /new. |
| Only support can open a ticket for someone else. | You named a member and are not on the support team of the panel. |
| This panel changes roles when a ticket opens or closes, so you can only open one for someone whose highest role is below yours. | You named a member whose highest role is at or above yours, on a panel with roles under Roles on open and close. |
| This panel gives a role above your highest one, so only the server owner can open a ticket with it for someone else. | You named a member, and the panel gives the ticket owner a role at or above your own highest role. See Who can pick which roles. |
| That member is not in this server. | The person you named is not a member of this server. |
| Pick the panel this ticket should come from. | Several panels let you use /new. Pick one from the menu under the reply. When you named a member it reads "Opening a ticket for @ren.oakley. Pick the panel it should come from." |
| That panel no longer exists. That member is no longer in this server. | The panel was deleted, or the member left, while the panel menu was open. |
| Not opened: followed by the member and the reason | The panel's rules turned it down, for example "Not opened: @ren.oakley holds a blocked role." or "Not opened: @ren.oakley already has 1 open, and the limit is 1." |
| A ticket for @ren.oakley is already being opened. | Someone else is opening a ticket for that member at the same moment. |
| This panel has just filled up, so no ticket was opened. Try again once a ticket is closed. | Another ticket took the panel's last place under Open tickets in total while this one was being opened. Its channel is removed again. |
| You have opened a few tickets in a row. Try again in 2 minutes. | You can open five tickets in a row, for yourself or for others, then one more every 2 minutes. The time counts down. |
| Sortr is busy in this server right now. Try again in 6 seconds. | The server can have ten tickets opened in a row, then one more every 6 seconds. The time counts down. |
#/close
| Options | ticket (optional): which ticket to close. Blank closes the one you are in.reason (optional): why it was closed, up to 500 characters. |
| Where | Inside a ticket, or anywhere else with the ticket option pointing at a ticket channel. |
| Who | The support team of the ticket's panel, or only the roles picked for /close. The server owner and Administrators always can, with the exceptions above. The member who opened the ticket cannot, unless a role they hold is picked. They close their ticket with the Close button. A role picked for /close that is not on the support team can only close a ticket it is in. |
Closes the ticket straight away, without the confirmation the Close button shows. Everything else is the same as a close by button. Sortr saves the transcript if the panel saves it when the ticket closes, takes the channel away from the owner and anyone added, posts the Ticket closed notice with Reopen, Transcript and Delete, and renames the channel and moves it to your closed category, if you have set one. Bots keep their access. If Sortr's role can no longer see the channel, or lacks Manage Permissions there, Sortr does not close the ticket at all. If Discord refuses Sortr anyway, for example when its role lacks Send Messages there, taking the channel away can fail, and the event log then names who may still be in.
By default the reason reaches the event log and webhooks. The default Ticket closed notice does not show it, so add {reason} to that message under Ticket Messages if you want it there.

| Closed. | The ticket is closed. |
| This is not a ticket channel. Run it inside a ticket, or pass one with the ticket option. | You ran it outside a ticket without the ticket option. |
| That channel is not a Sortr ticket. | The channel you picked is not a ticket. |
| That ticket is already closed. | The ticket was closed before you ran it. If someone else closed it in the same moment, the reply is "Already closed." |
| You can only close a ticket you are in. | You hold a role picked for /close, are not on the support team, and named a ticket you cannot see. |
| That ticket channel is gone. | Sortr could not find the ticket's channel in Discord. |
| That ticket is already being closed. | Someone else is closing, reopening or saving it at the same moment. |
| Sortr can't manage this ticket's channel any more, so it can't close it. Let the server's staff know. | Sortr's role can no longer see the ticket's channel or lacks Manage Permissions there, so it could not lock anyone out. Nothing is changed. The Close button gets the same answer. |
#/transcript
| Options | None. |
| Where | Inside a ticket, open or closed. |
| Who | The support team of the ticket's panel, or only the roles picked for /transcript. The server owner and Administrators always can, with the exceptions above. The Transcript button's role lists do not apply. |
Saves a transcript of everything so far and sends it where the panel's Transcripts settings say: your Discord channel and the Sortr site. A save by hand is never sent to the member's DMs. You also get the file in a private reply, "Transcript saved, 184 messages." for example. With every Transcripts switch off, only you get the file.
The command and the Transcript button save at most once per ticket every 2 minutes between them.
| Reply | When |
|---|---|
| Transcript saved, 184 messages. | The transcript is saved. The file is attached. |
| Transcript saved, 184 messages. It's too large to attach here. Read it on sortr.xyz: https://sortr.xyz/t/… | The transcript is too large for Discord to take in this server: 20 MB, more with Server Boost level 2 or 3. The link is to the copy on the Sortr site, and is left out when none was kept. |
| Transcript saved, 184 messages. The file itself couldn't be attached just now. | The transcript is saved, but Sortr was sending a lot of files at that moment, so your reply has no file. |
| Run this inside a ticket channel. | You ran it outside a ticket. |
| A transcript of this ticket was saved moments ago. Try again in 2 minutes. | One was saved with the command or the button less than 2 minutes ago. The time counts down. |
| A transcript of this ticket is already being saved. | Someone else is saving, closing or reopening the ticket at the same moment. |
| Sortr is saving many transcripts for this server right now. Try again in a few minutes. | Ten transcripts from this server are already being saved or waiting their turn. This try does not count towards the 2 minutes. |
#/add
| Options | member: who to add. role: a role to add, so everyone who holds it gets in. Pick one or both. |
| Where | Inside an open ticket, or in any text or announcement channel that is not a Sortr ticket. Not in a thread. |
| Who | In a ticket: the support team of the ticket's panel, or only the roles picked for /add. The server owner and Administrators always can, with the exceptions above. The member who opened the ticket cannot, unless a role they hold is picked. Only the support team can add a role.In another channel: the server owner and Administrators, or someone who may use /add on a panel that has it switched on (that panel's support team, or only the roles picked for it), and who also has Manage Permissions and View Channel on that channel, so they could let them in by hand. Only the support team of such a panel, one that also lets them use /add, can add a role. In a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions, only the server owner. |
Gives the member or role View Channel, Send Messages and Read Message History in the channel. In a ticket, a member added gets the Member added message, which pings them. A role added gets a plain line naming it, which pings nobody. They lose access when the ticket closes and get it back if it is reopened. Bots keep their access. If Discord refuses Sortr in that channel, taking the channel away at the close can fail, and the event log then names who may still be in; letting them back at a reopen can fail too, for example when Sortr's role lacks Manage Permissions there, and the event log then names who is still locked out.
In a channel that is not a Sortr ticket, such as a Ticket Tool ticket that was not taken over, Sortr posts a plain line naming who was added, pinging only a member. Nothing closes there, so they keep their access until someone takes it away in the channel's permissions. Sortr gives only what both its role and you hold in that channel.
Sortr can only give what its role holds itself in the channel. A member or role added with less than the three gets in all the same, and the event log names what was left out (A member was added with less access, A role was added with less access). If Sortr cannot let them in at all, nobody is added and the log says Could not add a member or Could not add a role.
| Reply | When |

| Added @dev.sam. | They are in. |
| Added @Moderators. Everyone with the role can see this ticket now. | The role is in. In another channel it says "this channel". |
| @dev.sam is already in this ticket. | They were added before. |
| @dev.sam can already see this ticket. | They see it through a support role or Administrator, so nothing is added. Adding them would only lock them out at the close. A role that can already see it gets the same reply, and in another channel it says "this channel". |
| Pick a member, a role or both to add. | You picked neither. |
| Only support can add a role to a ticket. | You hold a role picked for /add but are not on the support team. |
| /add can't let @everyone in. Pick a role. | You picked @everyone, which would open the channel to the whole server. |
| That role belongs to a bot or an integration, so it is not added. | The role was made by Discord for a bot or an integration. |
| Only the support team, or the roles picked for /add in the dashboard, can use /add. | You ran it outside a ticket and no panel with /add on lets you use it. "Only support can add a role." means it lets you add members but not roles. |
| This channel is not a Sortr ticket. Here, /add needs Manage Permissions on the channel, the same as adding someone by hand. | You ran it outside a ticket without Manage Permissions and View Channel there. |
| This channel is not a Sortr ticket. Here, only the server owner can use /add, since the server requires 2FA. | You ran it outside a ticket, in a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions. Sortr cannot tell who has 2FA. |
| /add works in a ticket or a text channel, not here. | You ran it in a thread, a voice channel or a forum. |
| This ticket is closed. | Nobody can be added to a closed ticket. Reopen it first. |
| This ticket is busy right now. Try again in a moment. | Sortr was busy with the ticket, for example closing it or saving its transcript, for more than about 6 seconds. It waits that long before answering this. |
| That is the ticket owner. Close the ticket instead. | You named the member who opened the ticket. |
| Bots are not added to or removed from tickets. Sortr manages its own access. | You named a bot. In another channel it says "Bots are not added to channels with /add." |
| That member is not in this server. | The person you named is not a member of this server. |
| Sortr can't add people to this ticket: it needs Manage Permissions on the channel. A server admin can fix that. | Discord would not let Sortr give them access to the channel: Sortr's role needs Manage Permissions and View Channel there. The event log says Could not add a member, with where to let Sortr's role in. For a role it says "Sortr can't add a role to this ticket", and in another channel "Sortr can't add to this channel: it needs Manage Permissions on it." |
With both a member and a role, every check runs first, so a refusal adds neither, and the reply has a line for each.
#/remove
| Options | member (required): who to remove. |
| Where | Inside an open ticket. |
| Who | The support team of the ticket's panel, or only the roles picked for /remove. The server owner and Administrators always can, with the exceptions above. The member who opened the ticket cannot, unless a role they hold is picked.Only the support team can remove a member of the support team. |
Takes out someone who was added to this ticket, such as with /add, and posts the Member removed message. It only removes someone who was added. It cannot take away access someone has through a role, and it leaves alone a member who was shut out of the channel by hand in Discord.
| Reply | When |
|---|---|
| Removed @dev.sam. | They are out. |
| @dev.sam was not added to this ticket. | They were never added, or they see the ticket through a role. |
| Only support can remove a member of the support team. | You hold a role picked for /remove, are not on the support team, and named someone who is. |
| That is the ticket owner. Close the ticket instead. | You named the member who opened the ticket. |
| Sortr can't take @dev.sam out of this ticket: it needs Manage Permissions on the channel. A server admin can fix that. | Discord would not let Sortr change the channel: Sortr's role needs Manage Permissions there. The event log says Could not remove a member, and they are still in. |
/remove takes a member only, and only inside a ticket: run outside one it replies "Run this inside a ticket channel." To take a role added with /add back out, remove it in the channel's permissions in Discord; Sortr then leaves it out at the close and the reopen. The replies for a closed or busy ticket, a bot and someone who is not in the server are the same as for /add.
#Buttons inside a ticket
Staff and members can do most of this with buttons instead. By default:
| Button | Where it is | Who can press it | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🔒 Close | Under the opening message | The ticket owner and the support team | Shows the close confirmation, only to you. Close ticket closes it as /close does. Cancel leaves it open. |
| 🔓 Reopen | On the closed notice | The support team | Reopens the ticket: the owner and anyone added get the channel back, and the channel gets its open name back and moves to your open category. The buttons on the closed notice go. If Discord refuses Sortr in that channel, for example when its role lacks Manage Permissions there, letting them back can fail, and the event log then names who is still locked out. If staff wrote in it after it closed, Sortr first warns that everyone who comes back will be able to read those messages, and you press Reopen anyway to go ahead. |
| 📄 Transcript | On the closed notice | The support team | The same as /transcript, with the reply "Saved, 184 messages." |
| ⛔ Delete | On the closed notice | The support team | Asks first, in a prompt only you see, which says what happens to the conversation. Delete ticket on that prompt deletes: Sortr saves a transcript first when one is called for, posts the Before deletion notice, unless it is switched off, and removes the channel 8 seconds later. Dismissing the prompt keeps the ticket. See Deleting. |
You can relabel each button, hide it, or change who may press it under Ticket buttons, with Support team only, Allowed roles and Blocked roles. Those lists are for the buttons only: command roles do not reach buttons. Pressing a button you may not use gets a private reply and leaves the ticket alone:
| Reply | When |
|---|---|
| That is for the support team. | The button is set to Support team only and you are not on the team or in its Allowed roles. |
| Only the ticket owner or support can close this. | You pressed Close in a ticket you did not open, and you are not on the support team. |
| That is not something your role can do here. | One of your roles is under the button's Blocked roles. The server owner never gets this, and neither do Administrators, except in a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions. |
| That button has been switched off. | The button was hidden in the dashboard after the message was posted. |
Working a ticket walks through a ticket from a staff member's side.
#/help
| Options | None. |
| Where | Anywhere in the server. |
| Who | Everyone. Every server Sortr is in has it, whatever its panels switch on, and Discord lists it for every member. |
/help is not a panel command. It is not on the Slash commands screen, nothing switches it off, and the Slash commands changed entry in the event log never names it. Only the person who runs it sees the reply, and the reply depends on who asks:
| Who asks | What Sortr replies |
|---|---|
| The server owner, or a member with the Administrator permission | Sortr is set up in its dashboard, not with commands. Then three steps: open the dashboard (a link) and sign in with Discord; pick this server, make a ticket panel and send it to a channel; and "Members press the panel's button, and Sortr opens a ticket channel for them and your support team." It ends with three lines: "By adding Sortr, you agreed to Sortr's Terms of Service (https://sortr.xyz/terms) and Data Processing Terms (https://sortr.xyz/processing).", "Privacy Policy: https://sortr.xyz/privacy" and "Problem with Sortr, or want to report misuse? team@sortr.xyz" |
| Everyone else | To open a ticket, press the button on this server's ticket panel. Then "Sortr opens a ticket channel for you and the support team." and "This server's admins set Sortr up at", with a link to the dashboard. It ends with "Privacy Policy: https://sortr.xyz/privacy" and "Problem with Sortr, or want to report misuse? team@sortr.xyz" |
When Sortr's role is missing any of View Channel, Manage Channels, Manage Roles, Send Messages, Embed Links or Read Message History in the server, the reply to the owner and Administrators says what is missing, after the three steps, for example: "Sortr can't open tickets here yet: its role is missing Manage Roles. Give its role those in Server Settings, Roles, or press Re-add Sortr on this server's page in the dashboard."
#Import into Sortr
| Where | On a message, not after /: right-click a panel Ticket Tool posted (on a phone, press and hold it), then Apps, then Import into Sortr. It is only on the menu while Ticket Tool is in the server. |
| Who | The server owner and Administrators. Discord lists it only for members with the Administrator permission. In a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions, only the owner can use it. |
It is for a Ticket Tool panel that Import from Ticket Tool in the dashboard does not find, such as one far back in a busy channel, or for every panel while Sortr isn't reading message text in the server's channels. Sortr holds the panel for 30 minutes, and it shows up in the next scan. See Switching from Ticket Tool.
| Reply | When |
|---|---|
| Got it. This panel will be in your import for the next 30 minutes: in Sortr's dashboard, open your server's name and press Import from Ticket Tool. | The panel is held. The reply has an Open the dashboard button. |
| That message isn't from Ticket Tool. Right-click a panel Ticket Tool posted, then pick Import into Sortr. | Ticket Tool did not post that message in this server. |
| That Ticket Tool message has no button or menu that opens a ticket, so it isn't a panel. | The message is Ticket Tool's, but nothing on it opens a ticket. |
| That's a ticket's own message, not a panel. Right-click the panel members press to open a ticket. | The message is inside a ticket, or has a Close or Claim button, or mentions a member. |
| Only the server's owner or an Administrator can import panels into Sortr. | You are neither. |
| This server requires 2FA for moderators, so only its owner can import panels from here. Use Import from Ticket Tool in Sortr's dashboard instead. | You are an Administrator in a server that requires 2FA for moderator actions. |
